It takes the casual, mode-focused fun of Unreal Tournament and blends it with the arena-shooter madness that Perfect Dark and GoldenEye presented for the N64. Nearly everything about Halo 2's multiplayer is excellent. Those features are taken for granted today, although Halo 2's gameplay sure isn't. Instead of browsing through multiple lobbies or setting up a LAN party, players select their favorite mode and hop straight into a match. Microsoft's Xbox series of consoles would continue to push online features thanks to Halo 2's quintessential multiplayer experience. Halo 2was a game-changer for not only the FPS genre but console gaming at large. From old classics to modern takes on this genre - the sheer number of quality arena shooters is immense and will satiate many fans who are salivating for fresh and new experiences in a gaming subgenre that needs way more love than it's getting right now. While the multiplayer setup has changed and arena shooters have become less popular in modern times, many players can still check out some truly great titles under this umbrella to this day that will provide them with a cathartic experience in every way. Full 3D meshes are used instead of 2D sprites, dial-up internet isn't needed to compete with others, and the variety of game types in FPS games easily trump what was available decades ago. Instagib's my favorite mode for casual play and I could spend hours in it (anybody play Cube 2: Sauerbraten? lol), but not like this.First-person shooters have come a long way since the days of MIDI Maze and Doom. Now I know they're probably never gonne change it, and if other people like it, good for them. But this just straight up ruins Instagib for me. It's different from classical Quake, but meh, fine. I'm not a huge fan of the champion stuff in general, but I don't really mind in the other game modes. I don't want to get killed by anything other than another player's Railgun, melee or my own stupidity when standing somewhere taking environmental damage. It's supposed to be extremely minimalistic: One gun, no items, that's it. Be it Nyx's ability to just run from a fight whenever you want or, my personal nemesis, Slash's Plasma Trail that one's ungodly annoying in a mode without armor pickups.
